Affordable braces needed for a 13 year old

Tuesday, Aug. 24th 2010 11:57 AM

My X-wife is forcing the issue that our son needs to have braces.  She had dental insurance though work and I normally pay half of the cost that remains.  However she is now newly married and her new husband also had dental insurance.

I could not afford braces for our son when we were together and she wants me to pay for them now regardless that I do not have the extra money for them.   Is there any low cost braces or place where he can go for low cost braces.

If you have any control over where your X wife takes your son to get braces then you may want to look into dental clinics or dental schools. However you X may not be big on that idea.

  2. Tim Says:

If your X is forcing the issue with you and you have no choice in the matter I am not sure what you can do about it. Luckily you are only having to pay half the cost instead of all of it like I had too when my son was in braces.

Braces are really not so bad. Make sure you use the best dental insurance plan for the braces. Compare the dental insurance plans you have between the two of you and see which one would be better to use.

You are just going to have to work things out with her and if your son needs braces then it is something you should be doing for him anyway.

Although braces can be costly go down to the orthodontic office in question and find out what type of payment plan is available. Since you are splitting the billing the monthly payment may not be as bad as you think.

When my daughter had to have braces we did not have dental insurance at the time. I had to put $600.00 down and make payments of $75.00 a month. This may sound a lot but split in two you can see it not so hard to do. I your wife is will shop out orthodontic dentist for the best cost vs payment plan options.

Man it may suck to have to pay for things you do not want to. However step up and be the dad you should be. If your son needs braces then you need to do the right thing by him whenever possible.

Saying that your wife is forcing the issue only makes you sound bad. No one in theory put a gun to your head and made you have a child. Guess what having kids cost money.

Just because you divorced your wife did not mean you got a divorce from you son too. What you thinking now that she married that her new husband should be picking up the bill? Who is the boys father?

I have four children from 6 – 15 and even though I am not with my wife anymore I still take care of my children needs. (By the way, three of the four are currently in braces.)

In stead of trying to find a low cut way to getting cheap braces, try sitting down with your X to find out what the true cost of the braces are going to run you. If you really can not afford the extra cost talk to her and try to work some type of payment plan that you can afford to offer.
