The key is choosing the right plan that fits your dental needs the best.

The more you know about the dental plan the better equipped you are, and therefore, the greater the likelihood that you will make a reasonable decision.

Close to 48,250 Americans will be diagnosed with oral or pharyngeal cancer this year. It will cause over 9,575 deaths, killing roughly 1 person per hour, 24 hours per day. Of those 48,250 newly diagnosed individuals, only slightly more than half will be alive in 5 years.
Historically the death rate associated with this cancer is particularly high not because it is hard to discover or diagnose, but due to the cancer being routinely discovered late in its development.

The Mouth Cancer Foundation is encouraging people to Bite Back at Mouth Cancer, a simple head and neck cancer check which can be carried out by anyone at home, at any time, but ideally once per month.
The Self Examination
Face: Look at the whole face. Are there any swellings you haven’t noticed before? Inspect your skin. Has anything changed recently? Have moles become larger or started to itch or bleed? Turn your head from side to side. This stretches the skin over the muscles making lumps easier to see.
Neck: Run the fingers under your jaw and feel along the large muscle either side of neck using the balls of your fingers. Are there any swellings? Does everything feel the same on both sides?
Lips: Using your index, middle fingers and thumb to feel the inside of your mouth. Pull your upper lip upwards and bottom lip downwards to look inside for any sores or changes in color. Use your thumb and forefinger to feel around and inside your lips checking for any lumps, bumps or changes in texture.
Gums: Use your thumb and forefinger on the inside and outside of the gum working your way around the gum to feel for anything unusual.
Check your Cheeks: Open your mouth and pull your cheeks away, one side at a time, with your finger to look inside. Look for any red or white patches. Use your finger in the cheek to check for ulcers, lumps or tenderness. Repeat on the other side. Your tongue can be helpful to locate sore areas, ulcers or rough patches.
Tongue: Gently pull out your tongue and look at one side first and then the other. Look for any swelling, ulcer or change in color. Examine the underside of your tongue by lifting the tip of your tongue to the roof of your mouth.
Floor of Mouth: Lift your tongue up and look underneath then look at the floor of your mouth for any color changes that are unusual. Gently press your finger along the floor of your mouth and underside your tongue to feel for any lumps, swellings or ulcers.
Roof of Mouth: Tilt back your head and open your mouth wide to check the roof of your mouth. Look to see if there are changes in colour or ulcers. Check for changes in texture with your finger.

Oral premalignant lesions (OPLs) are considered risk factors for the development of oral cancer. In an article published online by JAMA Oncology, William N. William Jr., M.D., of the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, Scott M. Lippman, M.D., of the University of California, San Diego, and coauthors report the results of a randomized clinical trial that tested if the epidermal growth factor receptor inhibitor erlotinib would reduce oral cancer development in patients with high-risk OPLs defined by specific loss of heterozygosity (LOH) profiles. They also looked at LOH as a prognostic marker in OPLs. The authors note, that to their knowledge, the Erlotinib Prevention of Oral Cancer (EPOC) randomized clinical trial is the first molecularly based precision medicine trial design in cancer prevention, and the first study of OPLs to use cancer as the primary end point.

Graphene oxide could be used to make super strong dental fillings that don’t corrode, according to a new study. Research suggests we chew around 800 times in an average meal; that’s almost a million times a year. We put our teeth under huge strain, and often require fillings to repair them. Fillings are typically made of a mixture of metals, such as copper, mercury, silver and tin, or composites of powdered glass and ceramic. Typical metal fillings can corrode and composite fillings are not very strong; Graphene on the other hand is 200 times stronger than steel and doesn’t corrode, making it a prime new candidate for dental fillings.
