The Basics of Children Dental Health

Thursday, Mar. 24th 2011 10:42 AM

Good dental health starts with babies. Parents should start practicing good dental health once their babies start cutting their teeth. Waiting until the permanent teeth come in is too late. Toddlers should start on a regimen of maintaining their teeth once they are old enough to hold a toothbrush in their hand. And parents should start taking care of the baby’s teeth once they break through the gums. Adding the baby on the family dental insurance plan is a good idea, and will start health dental habits.

Teeth Development

Most babies will get their bottom two teeth anywhere from between three months and sixteen months. After the bottom teeth come in, the top teeth will follow in about two months. Teeth development will continue until the child has 20 primary teeth. Children start losing their baby teeth between six and seven years old, and permanent teeth will replace the baby teeth. The permanent teeth process is complete when the child gets the third molars, or wisdom teeth. This happens between age 17 and 22.

Taking Care of Children’s Teeth

Parents should start taking care of their children’s teeth as soon as they erupt. This means wiping the teeth with a damp cloth as soon as they appear. Do not give the child milk or juice in a bottle when going to bed. The sugars from the juice or milk will say on their teeth throughout the night, leading to cavities; plus, it is a hazard for choking. The child should be given water in the hour before bedtime if they are thirsty.

Once the child has a couple of teeth, begin brushing them with a child’s soft toothbrush. The new guidelines state that a non-fluoride toothpaste should be used. A pea-sized amount on a toothbrush is all that is needed. Teach the child how to hold the toothbrush and brush their teeth. It can become a morning and night-time ritual that is the start of establishing good dental hygiene.

Taking the Child to the Dentist

Most dental insurance plans will include children as part of the family. Due to the high number of children presenting to the dentist with cavities before they start preschool, the American Academy of Pediatrics changed their recommended first dental visit from age three to six months after the first tooth has erupted. This is usually between six months and twelve months.

Children who do not walk around with juice cups, sleep with a bottle, or have a family history of dental problems should not be considered high risk, as long as they practice good dental care. These children can generally wait until a later age to see the dentist. Parents should check with their pediatrician for recommendations, as well as with their own dentist.

Children can visit the family dentist, if they accept children, or go to a pediatric dentist. Make sure the dentist participates in the dental insurance plan.

Start children on good dental hygiene and habits early. They will thank you for it in their later years when they have developed strong, healthy teeth.

Kids Dental Care for a six year old

Tuesday, Aug. 10th 2010 7:12 AM

My daughter is six and she had three cavities already.  This is upsetting to me even though the dentist told me her baby teeth has poor tooth enamel and that is part of the reasons for the cavities.

I do watch her brush her teeth many times we brush our teeth together.  Now I think it is time to teach her how to floss but I am not sure she is really getting it down.  Is she still to young for flossing?

Dental care for kids, Need a new dentist for my son.

Wednesday, Jul. 21st 2010 8:51 AM

I have a HMO dental plan currently.  Both my husband and I have been seeing this one dental office that is in our plan.  My son is two and I thought it is a good time to make a dental appointment for him.  I just found out that our dental office does not help two years old.

He will not see my son until he is five.  I think that is just too long to have him wait.  I do not dislike that office so I do not want to have to change providers.  Can my son have his own dentist and we keep seeing the one we want to?  Not sure how it would workout.

Getting dental insurance for kids.

Tuesday, Jul. 20th 2010 9:37 AM

What is a good age to get dental insurance for your child?  I do not have dental insurance right now and I am a singal mom.  However my son is going on one.  I think I need to take him to his first dental appointment soon.

I have the money to pay for a dental visit since he really does not have too many teeth right now I can see his dental cost being to high.  However when is a good age to pick him up some dental insurance?

Tuesday, Jul. 13th 2010 9:24 AM

My three year old daughter will need to start going to the dentist.  My husband has a very good family dental insurance plan though work.  The problem is the dentist we see will not take any children under the age of six.

I asked my dentist for a referral but he did not have one.  How do I find my daughter a good child dentist?  Any helpful tips and or advise is welcomed.

Kids baby teeth care, When should you start brushing baby teeth?

Tuesday, Jun. 29th 2010 8:27 AM

I have a ten month old son.  He already has quite a few of his baby teeth in.  Right now all I am doing is wiping them with a warm damp towel.  When do I start using toothpaste and a brush?  When is a good time to take him to the dentist?  Do you use a special tooth brush?   Advise needed on baby teeth care.  Thanks.

Kids Teeth Care, Rotten baby teeth need help

Sunday, Jun. 27th 2010 7:59 AM

My question is can a baby just have rotten baby teeth?  My good friend baby is just now cutting his first few baby teeth.  However the teeth that are coming out look rotten.  His teeth  are grayish white in color.  She does not know why this is happening.

I told her since she asked for my opinion that she should take him to see a dentist. That I am not sure if babies can be born with bad teeth or bad teeth color.  My sons teeth were white.

If she does take her son to see a dentist will a dentist be able to fixed her son’s teeth?  I would like to be able to get her some helpful information.  Since she is afraid of what the dentist is going to say about her son’s teeth.
